The Flat-Footed Boogie-Woogie: Clement Greenberg and the Washington Color School – Tate Papers | Tate
The prominence of the Washington Color School in the 1950s and 1960s has often been attributed to the influence of New York critic Clement Greenberg. Looking at this situation in reverse, this article examines the impact that painters working in Washington, D.C. had on Greenberg’s thinking, discusses how Washington as an international cultural and political force affected his ideas, and explores what Greenberg’s reaction to the work of Washington painter Gene Davis reveals about the critic’s definition of ‘failure’.
Notes on the Centre: Two Decades of American Painting in Australia, 1967 – Tate Papers | Tate
In 1967 the exhibition Two Decades of American Painting, organised by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, travelled to Sydney and Melbourne. While the exhibition has often been framed as introducing Australian artists to new forms of abstract painting, this paper argues that the paintings exhibited were just one manifestation of the transnational proliferation of abstraction globally, and that the exhibition precipitated a series of resonances, contacts and missed contacts between New York and Australia.
